Metrobank was established in 1962 in Binondo, Manila by a group of businessmen led by Mr. George S.K. Ty who is currently the bank's chairman of the board and single biggest shareholder. Its present head quarters are at Metrobank Plaza located on Sen. Gil Puyat Avenue, Makati City, the Philippines' financial center.

The Metrobank Tokyo branch started it operations on March 28, 1996, obtaining all necessary licenses from the Ministry of Finance Japan. The former office was located at 5-4 koji-machi Chiyoda-ku Tokyo.

On April 11, 1999, the branch relocated its office to Nishi-Kanda, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, then on May 6, 2012, the branch relocated to 1F Kandabashi Park Bldg. 1-19-1 Kanda Nishiki-cho, Chiyoda-ku Tokyo, to accommodate the increase in volume of transactions and to consolidate operations in one office.

The Metrobank Osaka sub-branch started operations on December 14, 1998, the former office was located at 2F Kitahama Daimei Building 2-3-7 Fushimi-cho Chuo-ka Osaka. On November 3, 2000, the office transferred to 1F Honmachi Central Building, 4-2-5 Honmachi, Chuo-ku, Osaka and on November 24, 2015, relocated to 3F Osaka Kokusai Building, 2-3-13 Azuchi-machi, Chuo-ku, Osaka to accommodate the increasing volume of operations.
